Stormy Tip

Think Again

Did you know fertilizing your lawn can harm ocean wildlife? Fertilizers contain elements such as nitrogen and phosphorous that can flow off our lawns and end up causing algae blooms in our rivers and bays, which in turn can kill off fish and shellfish.

What is Think Blue?

Think Blue Massachusetts is about clean water.  It is a spirited and creative outreach campaign that inspires stewardship of coastal and inland waters. The Think Blue campaign increases public awareness and action regarding the impacts of polluted stormwater runoff.  The campaign was designed by advertising and environmental professionals, and is based on market research and social marketing principles.

Think Blue Massachusetts is guided by the Massachusetts Bays Estuary Association (MBEA) and is put into action by Think Blue Teams in their own communities and neighborhoods. The MBEA developed the Think Blue campaign in concert with the Think Blue Coalition—a partnership of diverse supporters and sponsors that helps to guide the campaign.

As featured in Think Blue’s television ad, the campaign’s mascot is Stormy the Duck. Stormy is a 15’ tall inflatable duck who never fails to attract hordes of curious children and adults wherever he goes.  During many public events over the past few years, Stormy has attracted thousands of people to the Think Blue exhibit to learn about the causes of and solutions to stormwater pollution. You can even become Stormy’s MySpace friend. Not bad for a duck!

Our campaign is loosely based on the Think Blue program originally developed by the city of San Diego, CA, and we are very grateful for their generosity in sharing some of their materials with us.
